DRONE INSTRUCTIONS

Burlington High School, Burlington, MA, is incorporating the use of drones (e.g.,Parrot Mambo Fly, Mavic Pro, and the Mavic Air) into their physics and photography classes for educational purposes. You're probably thinking, "Why Drones?" Well, drones allow us to observe different points of view that we otherwise we would not be able to see within a variety of educational environments. This site will help you learn more about how we use the Parrot Mambo Fly, Mavic Pro, and the Mavic Air in the classrooms.

Different Drones

DJI Mavic Pro

The DJI Mavic Pro drone is one of the most portable drones that can be stored and easily accessed. https://www.dji.com/mavic

Parrot

The Parrot Mambo drone is a small easily moveable drone used in classrooms. The drone is a quadcopter drone; which references to the shape. It records and captures real-life images. https://www.parrot.com/us/drones/parrot-mambo-fly#je-vole-en-un-instant-

Mavic Air

The Mavic Air is a smaller version of the DJI Mavic Pro. The main differences between these two drones is that you can control the lighting with the Mavic Air. https://www.dji.com/mavic-air?site=brandsite&from=navng and it is significant smaller than the DJI Mavic Pro. https://www.dji.com/mavic-air?site=brandsite&from=nav

Mavic Spark

The Mavic Spark is a drone that can be controlled by the use of yours hands and motions. It has a quicker launch than the other Mavic drones.

HOW CAN DRONES BE USED AT BURLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL?

Drones are being used at Burlington High school for a variety of ways within the classrooms. At Burlington High School, we want to focus their uses in photography and  physic classes. Drones are being incorporated into the photography class in order to capture breathtaking images from a variety of different angles. Additionally, drones were also used in a physics class. For example, students used the drones to calculate the velocity (e.g., distance divided by time) at which the drone is travelling at different speeds.

WHERE CAN YOU FLY THE DRONE?

Drones can be flown only areas that do not have any restriction. The FAA website, https://www.faa.gov/uas/where_to_fly/ , has an interactive map that will show you where the restricted and unrestricted areas in which you can safely fly your drone. It is required by the state to get a tag, for your drone; which is similar to the license plate of your car. Once you register your drone, you will receive a bar code specific to your drone. Per the FAA website, you will be subject to civil and criminal penalties if you meet the criteria to register an unmanned aircraft and do not register. “Better safe than sorry,” register your drone.

BEFORE YOU START...

If students have never used a drone before, our team recommends that they start with the Parrot Mambo drone as it is a small and easily controlled using only a cell phone and relatively inexpensive when compared to larger drones. Therefore, if the drone should crash and break, the replacement parts are less expensive to purchase.

FOR TEACHERS

Drone app "FreeFlight mini"

With this app you can calculate the speed of the drone from a certain distance. Also you can calculate the Max vertical speed as the drone takes off. With these two points You can find what the speed will be for distance (y).
